Review: How to Talk Language Science with Everybody, Laura Wagner & Cecile McKee
I was delighted to get the chance to review a new book from Laura Wagner & Cecile McKee all about doing lingcomm through hands-on demos and conversations at museums, science fairs and other public events. There's a lot in the book for anyone who wants to start or refine the way they share linguistics with different audiences, particularly those that do face-to-face interactive work.
I have written a full review that is in Language. Below you can read a couple of excerpts from the longer review.
Communicating about linguistics to non-specialist audiences (lingcomm) is a specialist skill set in its own right. Equipping more linguists with these skills is vital if linguistics is going to stake a claim for its relevance to people’s lives as more than a passing curiosity. Until now, this skill set had to be learned mostly through emulation of existing practitioners, online resources and informal networks. Thankfully, Laura Wagner (Ohio State University) and Cecile McKee (University of Arizona) have distilled their extensive experience running lingcomm activities and events into a clear and practical book. How to Talk Language Science with Everyone (Cambridge University Press) illustrates the best of lingcomm practice; it is informed by linguistic research as well as insights from related fields, including psychology, education and anthropology. It also illustrates the best of the lingcomm community more broadly; it is accessible to those new to the practice, encouraging in tone, and passionate about introducing more people to how great linguistics is (a fact taken as given in this book). The closing worksheets of each chapter are a sequence of activities that allow the reader to work towards what the authors call a ‘doable demo’, a well-planned hands-on demo that engages an intended audience in your topic of interest. While the activities in the early chapters are not particularly linked to the chapter topic, as the book builds the activities allow the reader to put the lessons of the chapter to work designing and refining a hands-on demo. The book can make a good classroom resource for anyone lucky enough to be able to run a lingcomm/scicomm subject, but the clear structure of the book means that it can be put to great use in the hands of an individual with time to work through the activities. It would be great to see more people working on short, engaging hands-on demos that capture people’s linguistic imagination (and, as the authors say in the book, sharing them!). Alongside initiatives like 3 Minute Thesis and 5 Minute Linguist, a hands-on demo can be an important part of a linguist’s toolkit for communicating with a range of audiences outside of academia. This book is perfect for you to share with your engaged graduate students or highly-enthusiastic undergraduates.
Thanks to Language for arranging for the review copy!

This is why, so many people advised my generation (I'm about 40) "not to go to school if we didn't understand what we were getting out of it."
There were also many who were not aware of the price of tuition trend who advised me to go, working off nothing more than the average earning power of every level of education. (I'm not going to say some degrees are worthless, because that is not true. But some degrees are overrepresented compared to positions available and some are underrepresented.)
A surprising number of available positions are considered "High School Diploma required" but since many high schools have turned into college prep schools instead of high schools, and therefore no longer teach machine shop or welding or basic electrical work to the level of certification anymore. It's gotten to the point that there's no point in going to high school either.
Go down to your library, or used bookstore, (or amazon.com) and find some technical manuals in whatever subject you want jewellery making, or welding, or beekeeping. Or go down to your county courthouse and find the building inspector's office, and buy a copy of the building code, and just read it.
It won't give you practice doing any of the techniques, but you'll have an idea of the range of skills it would take to be competent in the field. Give you a lot more information about which fields you might want to get into or stay out of than you might get any other way. Then walk into a place of business like that, get a summer internship, look around for who's having the most fun, and find out what it takes to have that position, (education-wise, certification-wise, stress levels, work/life balance-wise, etc), whether you still want it / and think you can manage that. etc.
And the ridiculous part is that technical education(STEM) is exactly how we won the world wars and the Cold War, we know that's what it takes to keep the standard of living moving forward, but we've let two or three generations of youth see that banking and investing, instead of being a basic utility that is meant to lubricate industry for everyone, turn into a many-tentacled leach monster that is sucking it all dry. And when there weren't enough banking jobs available, and not enough people willing to say, investing (not speculating) is actually hard tedious work, but mostly just takes a lot of algebra, here's Securities Analysis 2nd Edition by Graham and Dodd. The Bible of Investing.
Or you can learn calculus and business communication and go into Engineering. Or statistics and go into biology. or both and go into Physics.
But no, of course not, you don't need to learn anything, just buy whatever feels right without doing market research on how you're going to help people with it and lose your shirt in crypto or college debt.
It's not the bank's fault that the car salesman is predatory, nor the car salesman's fault that banks are predatory, but together you cannot trust them.
Same with colleges and banks.
Colleges ought to be saying, Don't trust banks, use this worksheet to calculate the real cost of borrowing money, against the real cost of taking longer to finish your degree if you just take night school. Etc. (Do you already have a job that would allow you to take night school or whatever? How much is that salary?) How much farther ahead or behind will you be at the end of each year for ten years?
The speech I heard for my college orientation went like this: You are all here because you like learning, and you don't mind working, (or vice versa) and you've chosen one of the narrow ranges of fields that are currently growth fields. (smart choice)
But!
You won't get rich working.
Let me say that again.
You won't get rich working.
(Money comes to those who help people.)
You get more money by helping MORE people.
You will get wealthy by leveraging your own specialisation to better help more people. (Several examples to convince us that by the time we graduate, we should be hiring each other for each other's specialties, rather than trying to be independent generalists.)
Also, you can become wealthy by patiently leveraging your growing net worth to help more people help other people. (Which neatly includes, growing your business, investing in other people's businesses, and repairing and managing real estate.)
(A quick example of how he bought broken-down real estate, fixed it up, and found people who actually needed it, to sell it to.)
And then he wrapped up with a tour of the college and help getting our library cards.
Tumblr media
They just want there to always be a class of people who are forever in debt. Whether it's chattel slavery, prison, student loan debt, medical debt, renters who will never be able to own a house, etc.

A Thorough Manual for Addressing Common Excel Mistakes
For everyday computations, financial modeling and data analysis, Microsoft Excel is a powerhouse. Still, even experienced users can run into annoying mistake notices halting advancement. Knowing these mistakes, their origins, and how to fix them will help you save time and headaches. We will delve in this guide on the most often occurring Excel problems, their causes and workable corrective solutions. This article will guide you with surety around Excel's quirks whether you are a professional or just starting.
1. #DIV/0! Error: Division by Zero
The #DIV/0! error appears when a formula attempts to divide a number by zero or an empty cell. Excel cannot process division by zero, as it’s mathematically undefined.
Why It Happens
A formula like =A1/B1 where B1 is zero or blank.
Referencing a cell with no value in the denominator.
Using functions like AVERAGE on a range with no valid numeric data.
How to Fix It
Check the Denominator: Ensure the cell in the denominator (e.g., B1) contains a non-zero value. If it’s blank, you might need to input a value or adjust your data.
Use IFERROR: Wrap your formula in IFERROR to handle the error gracefully. For example: =IFERROR(A1/B1, "Not Divisible") returns "Not Divisible" instead of the error.
Use IF to Avoid Zero: Use =IF(B1=0, "Not Divisible", A1/B1) to check if the denominator is zero before performing the division.
Pro Tip
To prevent this error across a large dataset, use conditional formatting to highlight cells with zero values in the denominator, making them easier to spot.
2. #VALUE! Error: Invalid Data Type
The #VALUE! error occurs when Excel encounters an invalid data type in a formula, such as text where a number is expected.
Why It Happens
Performing calculations with cells containing text (e.g., =A1+B1 where A1 contains "text").
Incorrect arguments in functions, like using a text string in a mathematical function.
Hidden spaces or non-numeric characters in cells that look like numbers.
How to Fix It
Verify Data Types: Check the cells referenced in the formula. Use ISNUMBER(A1) to confirm if a cell contains a number.
Clean Data: Remove hidden spaces or characters using the TRIM or CLEAN functions. For example, =TRIM(A1) removes leading/trailing spaces.
Convert Text to Numbers: If numbers are stored as text, select the cells, click the error indicator (yellow diamond), and choose “Convert to Number.”
Pro Tip
Use the VALUE function to convert text that looks like a number into an actual number: =VALUE(A1).
3. #REF! Error: Invalid Cell Reference
The #REF! error indicates that a formula refers to a cell that is no longer valid, often due to deleted rows, columns, or worksheets.
Why It Happens
Deleting a cell, row, or column referenced in a formula.
Moving or copying a formula to a location where referenced cells don’t exist.
Referencing a closed workbook or a moved external file.
How to Fix It
Check References: Review the formula to identify missing references. Excel’s formula auditing tools (Trace Precedents/Dependents) can help.
Undo Deletions: If you recently deleted cells, use Ctrl+Z to undo the action and restore the reference.
Update Links: If the error stems from an external workbook, ensure the linked file is accessible or update the reference path.
Pro Tip
Before deleting rows or columns, check if they’re referenced in formulas using the “Find & Select” tool to search for cell references.
4. #NAME? Error: Unrecognized Text in a Formula
The #NAME? error appears when Excel doesn’t recognize text in a formula, often due to typos or missing add-ins.
Why It Happens
Misspelling a function name (e.g., =SUMM(A1:A10) instead of =SUM(A1:A10)).
Using a named range that doesn’t exist.
Referencing a function from an add-in that isn’t enabled (e.g., Analysis ToolPak).
How to Fix It
Check Spelling: Double-check function names and ensure they’re correct. Excel’s formula autofill can help avoid typos.
Verify Named Ranges: Go to Formulas > Name Manager to confirm the named range exists and is correctly defined.
Enable Add-ins: If using specialized functions, ensure the relevant add-in is enabled via File > Options > Add-ins.
Pro Tip
Use Excel’s Formula AutoComplete feature to select functions and avoid spelling errors.
5. #N/A Error: Value Not Available
The #N/A error typically occurs in lookup functions like VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH when the searched value isn’t found.
Why It Happens
The lookup value doesn’t exist in the source data.
Mismatched data types (e.g., text vs. number) in the lookup column.
Incorrect range references in lookup formulas.
How to Fix It
Verify Lookup Value: Ensure the value you’re searching for exists in the lookup range.
Check Data Consistency: Ensure the lookup value and source data have the same format (e.g., both are numbers or text).
Use IFERROR: Wrap the formula in IFERROR to display a custom message, like =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A1, B1:C10, 2, FALSE), "Not Found").
Pro Tip
Use MATCH to test if the lookup value exists in the range before running the full formula.
6. #NUM! Error: Invalid Numeric Values
The #NUM! error appears when a formula contains invalid numeric values, such as calculations that exceed Excel’s limits.
Why It Happens
Calculations producing numbers too large or too small for Excel to handle.
Invalid arguments in functions like SQRT (e.g., =SQRT(-1)).
Iterative calculations failing to converge.
How to Fix It
Check Formula Inputs: Ensure inputs are within acceptable ranges. For example, use ABS to avoid negative numbers in SQRT.
Adjust Iteration Settings: If using iterative calculations, go to File > Options > Formulas and adjust the maximum iterations or change limit.
Simplify Formulas: Break complex calculations into smaller steps to identify the problematic part.
Pro Tip
Use IF to validate inputs before performing calculations, like =IF(A1>=0, SQRT(A1), "Invalid Input").
7. #NULL! Error: Invalid Range Intersection
The #NULL! error is rare and occurs when a formula specifies an invalid intersection of ranges.
Why It Happens
Using a space instead of a comma or colon in a formula (e.g., =SUM(A1 A10) instead of =SUM(A1:A10)).
Incorrectly referencing multiple ranges that don’t intersect.
How to Fix It
Check Syntax: Ensure you’re using the correct operator (: for ranges, , for separate arguments).
Review Range References: Confirm that referenced ranges intersect or are correctly defined.
Pro Tip
Use Excel’s formula bar to carefully review syntax, as small typos can trigger this error.
8. General Troubleshooting Tips
Beyond specific error fixes, here are some universal strategies to prevent and resolve Excel errors:
Use Formula Auditing Tools: Found under the Formulas tab, tools like Trace Precedents and Evaluate Formula can pinpoint error sources.
Validate Data: Use Data Validation to restrict cell inputs to specific types, reducing errors like #VALUE!.
Keep Backups: Save a copy of your workbook before making major changes to avoid losing data due to #REF! errors.
Update Excel: Ensure you’re using the latest version of Excel, as updates often fix bugs and improve error handling.
Conclusion
Excel errors can be daunting, but they’re often straightforward to resolve once you understand their causes. By systematically checking formulas, data types, and references, you can quickly get back to your work. So I’ve been writing a program for most of this week at work. One of our instruments spits out an excel file with thousands of rows, and the normal practice for data processing was to manually select specific columns for ranges of a couple hundred rows at a time to copy paste into another sheet.
There was no way to select an entire range at once - you had to scroll.
So, combined with having to make the destination worksheet for all this, this takes me several hours. So I get bored, and annoyed, and well I’ve seen random things online while trying to figure out excel about being able to code programs to automate it, so now I’m teaching myself VBA.
Anyway, after a lot of googling and recoding pretty much my entire program for efficiency, I’ve got a thing that’ll generate the destination worksheet and then process 10 000 rows of data in about two seconds. I almost thought it hadn’t worked at first since it didn’t freeze up like it would’ve before the rewrite (it had been taking a full minute for 1000 lines) but the sheer joy that hit me when I realized it worked. Maybe I should have gone into compsci

Mastering Microsoft Excel - Tips For Advanced Users
Whether you're a professional Excel user or just using it to keep track of your own finances, Microsoft's industry-leading spreadsheet software has a wealth of features that can save time and improve accuracy. Mastering these advanced techniques will help you to impress coworkers and clients, as well as keep your workflow running smoothly. From learning how to quickly format and move data to creating a drop down list, these tips are sure to make you the envy of your colleagues at your next work meeting.
Adding and subtracting numbers is fairly straightforward, but multiplying and dividing aren't as simple. When you're working with large numbers, it's easy to miss a decimal point or miscalculate. Fortunately, there are a few simple tricks to remember to avoid making these mistakes. For example, if you want to multiply two numbers together, simply enter the first number followed by a comma and then the second number. This will automatically calculate the answer for you. To divide two numbers, use a forward slash (/) instead of a multiplication sign.
Tumblr media
Another useful tip is to format cells so that they display the information in a way you prefer. You can change the formatting of a cell by right-clicking on it and selecting "Format Cells." This will open a module where you can choose from a variety of options, including one that allows you to transpose columns into rows and vice versa. You can also select a cell and click "Paste Special" to paste the contents of that cell as text, which will convert any numbers into letters.
If you want to learn more advanced tricks, it's worth taking a course in Excel online from https://techogle.co/ a reputable provider. These courses offer comprehensive, flexible training that will allow you to study from home or at work and will give you a solid foundation in the program's functionality. These courses can range from a short, bite-sized video tutorial to an entire degree program.
You can also use keyboard shortcut keys to speed up your workflow. Some of these include Ctrl+C to copy, Ctrl+V to paste and Ctrl+Z to undo. In addition, you can use the shortcut key Ctrl+PgUp to switch between worksheet tabs and Ctrl+A to select all of the cells on a sheet.
Another great feature of Excel is that it can recognize a variety of different formulas and functions, allowing you to do calculations and analysis that would be difficult or impossible to do manually. Start by learning the basic formulas like SUM, AVERAGE and COUNT and then expand your knowledge to more advanced functions.
Finally, you can also save time by using the fill handle to select a group of cells. When you have a group of numbers that you want to drag, just hold down the mouse button and then drag downwards. The cells will follow the sequence of values or formulas you're dragging, saving you time when you're moving or formatting data. To get started, select the first value in the row and then click the small square at the bottom right corner of the cell selection border.

Chapter 3: Player Character Options
Section 1: Humans
Subsection 8 Part B: Hand-Eye Coordination
If an Entity (p. 84) has Hands (p. 250) which are connected to a functioning Central Nervous System (p. 215) AND this same Central Nervous System is connected to a Head (p. 223) module which has both a functioning Brain (p. 225) sub-module and a The Eyes (p. 229) multi-part sub-module installed and operational, then the Entity is eligible to use the following Ability:
Hand-Eye Coordination: Spend one Eye Action Point (p. 231) and one Hand Action Point (p. 252) to receive one Hand-Eye Action Point.
A Hand-Eye Action Point can be used for anything a Hand Action Point can be used for. Any rolls to complete this action receive a bonus calculated through filling out Worksheet 135A: Hand-Eye Coordination Action Point Bonus for Human-Class Hands and Human-Class Eyes (p. 317 in the Worksheets book or wksht135a.pdf if you have the digital resource pack). As a quick summary, the worksheet will have you:
Look up the bonus from light level of the target in the installed The Eyes's Illumination Level Bonus Table and apply penalties based on: A. The brightest light level in visible range, if brighter than the target. B. The difference between illumination level of the target and average perceived illumination over the previous 10 turns.
Look up the installed The Eyes submodule's Range Acuity Curve and solve the listed equation for the range of the target. Apply penalties based on: A. Focusing on multiple targets at significantly different ranges during the same turn. B. Movement of the target during the current turn which would have a Significant (p. 72) effect on the bonus.
The Multi-Hand Same-Task Bonus (p. 253) if applicable, up to the installed Brain's Effective Hand Count Limit (p. 229).
Apply any Synergy Bonuses (p. 92) arising from Synergies between: A. The Eyes and Head B. Head and Brain C. Brain and Central Nervous System D. Central Nervous System and Hands E. Other relevant Internal Connections (p. 204) the Entity may have between The Eyes and Hands
While this process is extremely straightforward, some tables may wish to streamline it somewhat. If this describes your table, turn to page 396 of this book for the included copy of Risus, play that instead, and feel shameful about it.

— procrastinate
summary: you sleep over at isagi’s after long procrastinating an assignment, there he makes a decision
warnings: isagi yoichi x gn reader, reader goes to isagi’s high school, blue lock not mentioned, 2.4k wc, reader sleeps over at isagi’s house, they do not share a bed, please don’t read this i’m begging
Tumblr media
“did you read yesterday’s chapter?” isagi whispered to you, on the topic of a new manga you both enjoyed.
you looked around the classroom before whispering back. “not yet. i think i’m falling behind.”
“that’s fine. i won’t spoil it.”
you smiled, you knew the two of you would likely fall into an hours long conversation after you read it.
the two of you were sitting next to each other in class, clearly a mistake by the teacher. she didn’t seem to notice though, as she announced the pairings for a project she’d given many warnings about.
“isagi and
” she began, before looking around the room. “y/n.”
that caught your attention. she likely hadn’t seen you in conversation, so you gave an awkward nod as if your neck hadn’t just snapped up at your name.
“cool. what’s the project again?” isagi looked just as confused as you were, neither of you having been listening.
“i dunno. i think she’ll explain again later though. hopefully.” you said.
after that, you turned your attention back to the teacher, and explain she did.
“your assignment is to create a poster about our school. you are to draw your favorite part of our school and attach an essay referring to the drawing. if you have any questions, approach me during class tomorrow.”
with that, the bell rang and you moved on to your next class without your friend.
Tumblr media
you and isagi shared many classes, the last class of your day—a free period—being one of them. when it ended, the two of you began for the library, already falling behind on homework.
the two of you walked next to each other, brushing shoulders every other step. neither of you had much to say so you walked in a comfortable silence occasionally pointing out a pretty flower in a yard, or a squirrel running along a fence.
once there, he led you to a small table in the back of the building. you dropped your backpack onto the floor as he turned his own upside-down and emptied it out onto the table.
“what did we have in math again?” he asked, sorting through his messy notebook.
you wracked your brain for a moment before responding, “worksheet. i didn’t finish it but i did the first bit.”
“uh huh. can i copy off you? please.” he gave a bright, guilty smile that you couldn’t say no to, even if you’d hadn’t already been about to hand it to him.
“yeah. i’ll work on those science questions. it’s only like 5 right?”
he had just pulled out his own, blank assignment before raising his head to meet your gaze. “oh, i did that. do you want mine?”
you did in fact want his, but you shook your head anyway. “no, he’ll probably recognize your answers. plus, this lesson isn’t that bad,”
he gave a serious nod. “okay.”
studying with isagi was a normal thing for the two of you. both of you would swear you worked better together, and no one could disagree because you each worked almost exclusively with each other.
he made studying worth it, especially considering that he’d usually walk you home afterwards even if his home was in another direction.
Tumblr media
after nearly an hour of homework, isagi remembered that he had promised his dad he’d be home to make dinner early that day.
“sorry, my mom is out of town and my dad’ll probably burn the house down.” his explanation was clearly true, considering that you had seen his dad try to cook before. “i guess he’s too fancy for take-out so the responsibility has fallen onto me.”
you nodded in understanding. “okay, you should get home.”
he began packing up his backpack. “come on. i’ll walk you home, i’m not supposed to be back for half an hour anyways.”
you smiled, amused at the sight of him cramming his many books into an already-overstuffed bag, the sight never getting old.
the two of you walked out of the library for your house. it wasn’t late, so the sun hadn’t yet begun to set, and the weather had improved from earlier that day.
as you walked, you and isagi both had a thought at the same time.
he stopped walking. “wait.” he said, trying to think.
you paused next to him. “weren’t we going to do something?”
it came to him. “yeah. the poster thing.”
“oh right.” you said, remembering. “we can do it tomorrow?”
he nodded. “okay. it shouldn’t be that bad. when’s it due again?”
you shrugged. “i’m not sure. we can ask her tomorrow during class.”
“no point in panicking, then.” he said with a smile, before continuing walking. “are you going to read the chapter when you get home?”
“oh yeah. i’ll text you when i’m done? we can talk after you make dinner.”
“great, it’s a really good chapter. i don’t want to spoil it but a certain character comes back at the end!”
“i have no idea who you’re talking about.” you said with a small laugh, evident in your voice.
your home was close to the library, so your talk was cut short when you rounded the corner and saw your house. you didn’t want to hold isagi for too long, so after you saw it you waved him an exaggeration goodbye and walked off, telling him to get home early.
Tumblr media
after your talk with isagi about working on your project the following day, you both were fully ready to begin.
but, you didn’t.
the next day you had a large test in a class. the day after he had a test in one of his.
eventually, it had been days since you’d last spoken about the poster you had agreed to work together on.
your teacher gave reminders nearly every class period, but she gave no time to work on it during school.
soon, even with the constant reminders, all thoughts of the impending assignment had left the minds of both you and isagi.
that was, until late at night on the thursday before it was due the next day.
it took isagi calling you, obviously in a panic, for your memory to be jogged.
“y/n!!” he yelled through the phone, clearly in a state of mid-panic.
“what happened?” you spoke back, concerned for both the safety of your friend and yourself.
“the project. it’s due in two days!” he said, still panicking. “the one we didn’t do!”
“oh.” you said, freezing. “oops.”
“uh
” he began muttering under his breath about something you couldn’t hear.
“you should come over to my house tomorrow. it’s too late to do anything today.” he paused. “you should sleepover.”
you felt your heart leap, although it was already racing from isagi’s panicked voice.
of course you had been to his house before, but you’d never slept over at his house. even if it was because of a forgotten assignment, it was better then nothing.
plenty of people would have accepted the late, but isagi wasn’t like that. he obviously wasn’t the best with schoolwork, but he was smart.
and, of course, their was his determination that he showed on the soccer field that tended to shine through in everything he did.
you didn’t realize you had forgotten to speak until you hear his calmer voice from the other end of your phone. “hello? are you there?”
“oh, sorry isagi.” you clear your throat and rock back and forth on your heels. “i’ll be there, can i come at 19:00?”
you hear the smile in his voice. “yeah, of course.” he pauses for a moment. “by the way, my mom will be back by then.”
“okay, thanks. good night!” you say, finally realizing how late it was.
“night, y/n. see you in school tomorrow.” there was a second of silence before he ended the call.
a smile appeared on your face. even if you had left it for so long, there was no way the poster would take all night. if you worked quickly, you could probably finish in time to actually hang out with him.
Tumblr media
you rapped your knuckles on the door three times. with no answer, you repeated the process.
this time, isagi arrived at the door as you finished and pulled it open for you.
you quickly took off your shoes and followed isagi into the kitchen, where you met his mom.
“hello mrs. isagi.” you said quietly, only having spoken to your friend’s mom on a few occasions.
“hello y/n, i hear you are here for a sleepover?” isagi’s mom asked, enjoying the sight of her son awkwardly shifting from side-to-side behind you.
“yeah.” you said. “we’re working on a- “
“ -movie. that i’ve been wanting to watch. isagi quickly cut you off.
you quickly figured that he hadn’t told his parents about your procrastination, which you silently thanked him for. it would have been awkward to explain that you were only there to panic and finish a project.
he turned to you. “we should go now. we have a lot of plans for this.”
“yeah.” you said. “thank you.” you addressed his mom with a bow of your head, before moving to follow isagi up the stairs to his room.
once behind his closed door, he collapsed against it.
“thanks for not saying anything. i promised my mom i’d stay on top of everything, and clearly i have not.”
“oh, that makes sense. i’m glad too, it would have been awkward to explain to her why we procrastinated for so long.”
“well, we should probably start now.” isagi said, ending a short silence.
“yeah. i’ll do the essay if you do the drawings?”
“okay.” he gave a nod without meeting your eyes, and pulled out blank poster paper from his backpack.
Tumblr media
although you did it to yourselves, neither you nor isagi particularly enjoyed rushing your assignment.
still, within a couple hours, you had each nearly finished and decided to switch places so you could touch up isagi’s drawing and he could proof-read your work.
while working, isagi decided to end the comfortable silence that had long reached its peak.
“what do you want to do? like after this?”
you looked up from the poster. “what?”
“we’re almost done, and you’re spending the night.” he smiled with a raise of an eyebrow. “what do you want to do afterwards?”
“oh, i
” you paused. “ -didn’t think that far ahead. i guess whatever you want?”
his face contorted into something obviously belonging to someone deep in thought. “we could play video games?”
“hah. okay.” you looked down at your lap and remembered what you were meant to be doing. “after we finish though.”
he shot finger guns in your general direction. “right, yeah.”
in a flurry of typing keys and light erase marks, you each finished half an hour later within 10 minutes of each other.
you stood back to appreciate your efforts.
isagi looked over at the clock next to him. it wasn’t that late, but you had been working for hours. “i think my parents are asleep.”
“should we be too, though?. you asked jokingly, knowing the answer would be something along a the lines of ‘probably not’.
he shook his head and led you down the stairs of his house into what was likely his living-room.
“here.” he smiled. “we can play whatever game you want.”
you quickly noted with a snicker that the boy who claimed to not often play video games, appeared to have a solid dozen soccer games.
“how about something not soccer related?” you proposed, already sorting through his games for something you could both enjoy.
you settled on a basic fighting game where you’d be pit against enemies, on the same team. as long as neither of you were charged with friendly-fire, it would be calm.
Tumblr media
after an hour of play, isagi abruptly stood up and shut down his gaming system. unfortunately, this left the room in an eerie dark that you were more then keen to get out of.
from the darkness, isagi began to speak. “we have school tomorrow, so we should probably get to bed.”
you let out a muffled laugh, and followed the sound of his voice to return to his room from the unfamiliar area. “yeah, it won’t help to pull any all-nighters on week days i guess.”
you, again, followed him up his stairs into his room. he gestured at a futon on the ground and spoke. “i’ll sleep on the futon, you sleep on the bed.”
you smiled. he could be ridiculously sweet sometimes, not even leaving you room for refusal.
“fine. if you wake up with back-pain in your own room, it’s on you,”
he, again, smiled. “deal.”
he turned his lights off and moved his door to be mostly closed, leaving the door slightly ajar.
the two of you quickly settled in, and a light silence took over the room as you both drifted off to sleep, in different beds.
except, isagi couldn’t sleep. for a long while, he tossed and turned on the futon, plagued with the feeling of something being wrong.
it wasn’t you, the fact that you were in his room. it was, that he was so far from you.
he vowed to himself, that in the morning, he would change that.
Tumblr media
you woke up easily, and early. for this, you blamed isagi’s alarm clock.
getting ready for school was a bit disjointed due to your and isagi’s conflicting morning routines, but you both tried your best. in the end, you both were ready for school, on time.
walking to school together with isagi certainly wasn’t rare for you, but you could have sworn he was going the wrong direction.
still, you chose to say nothing considering how little he was ever late. that, and the determination in his eyes was evident from a mile away. you didn’t doubt him.
in isagi’s mind though, he was starting to regret his split-second decision. he trusted himself though, and continued on.
finally, he stopped. you were confused at this and stopped as well. “are you ok- “
“i like you.” red erupted on his cheeks at his statement, as your eyes widened and cheeks burned as well.
in your state of shock, you responded breathlessly. “i like you too.”
he moved closer to you and tentatively took your hand in his. without words, a soft grin took over his gestures and he led you to school, where you arrived just on time, as a new couple.

Tom Hiddleston | Mister Hiddleston
Teacher!Tom Hiddleston x fem!reader
Tumblr media
plot : your professor, mister Hiddleston, asks you to stay after class in order to talk to you about one of your recent works. However, it easily takes an unexpected turn.
Warnings : teacher x student relationship, kissing.
The bell finally rang, allowing the entire class to take off for the cafeteria as the sounds of hungry stomachs echoed silently throughout the place. It was noon, and you had just spent a painful hour sitting in English literature class- having to listen to your handsome teacher brag about Romeo and Juliette, which in your opinion was quite a boring play. However, Mr. Hiddleston seemed to be absolutely hypnotized by the love he carried for Shakespeare’s work, which held you back from speaking your thoughts.
Right as you were about to get up from your chair, the older man called after you from where he sat at his desk, requesting for you to stay a little bit longer without even giving you a valuable explanation as to why. Of course, you felt absolutely scattered about not being able to join your friends in order to fill up your empty belly which was seriously beginning to behave out of your control. However, as a student, you simply couldn’t go against any of the adults’ demands.
Though, Mr. Hiddleston was never the typical type of teacher. He was interesting, chatty when it came to sharing with his students, and above all good looking- which was rare for a professor. Yet, all of those fantasies regarding him had to stay secret due to the obvious age gap between the two of you, as well as the profession he practiced. As a teacher, he wasn’t allowed to have a personal link with any of his students, which you were both aware of. However, this unexpected extra class was soon going to take a tragic turn.
It didn’t take long for the classroom to fully empty itself, you and your teacher being the only remaining beings in the room which offered the two of you some privacy to speak about whatever subject your professor wished to refer to. Taking his glasses off his nose as you stepped closer to his desk, Tom then laid them down in front of his muscular forearms before rubbing his palms against one another. He seemed to be peculiarly frustrated, as if something was bothering his experienced soul. Yet you remained quiet, showing respect for this man as his lips parted calmly.
“I wanted to talk to you about your last essay. It’s brillant, really, but.. quite dark, I’m afraid.” The older man revealed, taking ahold of the piece of paper on which was written your perfectly creepy work. You often tended to get your inspiration out of the worst- which was something Tom simply couldn’t be aware of and which easily led him to worry. The teacher looked up at you as he handed you the paper, ocean blue eyes seeking for an explanation which didn’t want to show up. In the end, you felt forced to speak up in order to defend your case.
“It’s just a stupid piece of paper. It’s not like I’m telling you about my life or anything.” You responded on an upset tone, feeling defensive face to your professor’s intrusive questions. However, this wasn’t enough to reassure Tom’s worries. Standing up from his chair, he then allowed his bum to collide with the end of the desk as his arms crossed against his strong chest. He was now towering over you, still waiting for his mind to elaborate a proper diagnostic of its own regarding your mental state. “Y/n...” the older man started, earning a clueless stare coming from your shorter silhouette.
Now, this innocent gaze had cut your professor right through his sentence. He seemed absolutely destabilized face to this sight, lips parting without any words ever escaping his mouth. His eyes easily diverted to your lips, admiring the way they were composed and how they perfectly fitted your other facial features. Even if he would never willingly admit it, Tom had developed a crush on you throughout the classes you spent with him, listening to him, even if it all remained pretty much hidden away in his subconscious.
The grown man worried for your mental health, for your well being. He assumed that it was his role as a tutor to make sure that all of his students were doing well, which he had progressively began to doubt you were. Seeing how you weren’t moving, the professor decided to take the risk to move the back of his hand up to your cheek, ocean blue eyes still staring into yours as he caressed your skin. It was a risky move to make, which easily justified his light shakiness. Tom knew that he would only get one chance, and that if you ever turned out not to share the same feelings as he did, he could say goodbye to his job as a teacher.
Meanwhile, you couldn’t help but unexpectedly loose your capacity to move as you felt your teacher’s veiny hand brush against your cheekbone. However, you didn’t freeze out of fear, but out of pure enhancement and excitement. You were glad that he had proceeded to make the first move, as yourself wouldn’t ever had the required guts to attempt anything with a man who was twice your age, and most importantly your own teacher.
His hand now cupped your entire cheek, causing you to drop the irrelevant paper to the ground as Tom’s face began to dangerously near yours. He leant in, head slightly tilting to the side before his lips finally decided to collide against yours. It felt like an explosion of fireworks in your lower stomach, feeling as his second hand decided to take ahold of your face as he stood up from the desk. This kiss was soft yet genuine, as if Tom had decided to make sure the territory wasn’t hostile before he could fully explore it.
When he pulled away, his thumbs simply began to brush against your cheekbones as your eyes locked, the two of you sharing unspoken words through your respective orbs only. The two of you wanted one another, desperately, and you were now irrevocably in love with him. This kiss had been the tilt which made you fall on the other edge, the tilt which allowed you to be set free from all the held backs you had forced down onto yourself regarding your professor. On another hand, your lack of hostility had managed to ease Tom’s anxious heart.
Leaning in again, he this once pressed a more intense kiss to your lips, body moving closer to yours until the two gently collided against one another. It felt heavenly, his touch and scent easily intoxicating and taking over your organism. Meanwhile, lust was progressively taking over your professor’s mind and body, his breaths becoming rougher as he pressed sloppy kisses against your mouth. Your lips parted, allowing his tongue to slide inside of your wet cave as the two of you continued to share a passionate kiss. His hands were soon to move down from your cheeks to your waist, feeling your curves with those large hands of his.
Unexpectedly, Tom ended up pulling away in order to focus onto the flesh of your neck, sending chills down your spine as his warm breath heated up your once chilly skin. He was getting more and more eager as seconds passed, anxiety still managing to hold your own desires back as your teacher seemed to be in charge of the situation for now. Progressively sneaking down, he began to lay kisses against your clothed chest and stomach, visibly looking forward to lift your shirt once he would’ve arrived all the way down to your crotch, aka his final destination.
You allowed shaky breaths to escape your lips, head tilting back before your face decided to divert down towards the sight of your literature teacher’s gorgeous curly hair. Hesitantly, your hand moved from his shoulder to his mane, caressing the smooth strands and curls which Tom interpreted as the green flag to lift your upper piece of clothing. However, upon feeling him now press kisses against your lower abdomen, you couldn’t help but grow fearful regarding your environment and surroundings.
ïżœïżœWait-..” you suddenly stopped him in his track, his face looking up at you as his ocean blue eyes were filled with confusion yet understanding. He was ready to listen to whatever complain or worry you felt like laying on the table. Gasping softly, you bit onto the skin of your inner cheek before finally finding the strength to speak up. “Not here.” You begged, not being comfortable with having your first sexual intercourse in a classroom in which anyone could unexpectedly walk in. It wasn’t Tom’s fault, but simply the surroundings’.
Standing back up on his feet, your professor nodded in agreement before attempting to press another kiss to your lips. However, this once you decided to back away, denying his lustful proposal which left the teacher in shock. But above all, he seemed confused. “You’re driving me crazy.” He affirmed lowly, referring to how infatuated he was with your being; and the fact that you now stepped away from him felt just like a dagger digging into his heart. You found yourself biting down onto the skin of your inner cheek again, suddenly feeling nervous face to the man and his many propositions.
“Please. I need to see you again. Tonight.” After speaking those desperate words, the literature teacher reached down for your worksheet before taking ahold of a pencil, writing his address down on the back of the paper before handing it to you. His lips were parted, silent pants coming out of his mouth as anxiety and nervousness sent his emotions over the roof. In fact, he was simply scared that you would deny his proposition. Yet you took ahold of the worksheet and looked down at the words he had written onto the back of the copy, admiring how nice his handwriting was.
“Promise me you’ll come.” He begged, visibly looking forward to receive an oral confirmation in order to ease his worries. No words exited your body but a simple nod accompanied by a fainted smile, leading your teacher to return the same discreet gesture your face currently adorned. And just like that, you walked out of his classroom with your heart beating faster than it ever had before at the thought of seeing him again later tonight.
I hope you guys enjoyed this😏 might do a part two soon enough. I’m open to suggestions and crunchy details y’all would be looking forward to read aboutđŸ’„đŸ’ł Requested tags : @fa-me @delightfulheartdream

All About You
Tumblr media
pairing: nerdy! Yuta Nakamoto x rich! bratty! Y/N (I hope I made justice) other characters: Johnny as your twin brother, Taeyong as your bestfriend word count: 4.2k words genre: fluff summary: He’s supposed to teach you Math, why is he teaching you to love? warnings: cursing, Y/N has a bad temper, cheating, cringe  Some scenes are inspired from ‘It Started with a Kiss’
a/n: Based on this ask. I’m sorry anon, this took such a long time to write. 😭 I just feel unmotivated to write and the week had been such a whirlwind of emotions. I’ve also been so busy, it’s so crazy.
Also, this is my thank you post for reaching another milestone of this writing blog. I never expected that I’ll past 500 followers but now, it’s in 1.5k. Thank you for following me and reading my works. Please, don’t hesitate to give me feedback even if it’s good or bad. 😅
"Y/N!" Your eyes shoot open at the sound, groaning when you realize that it was your brother shouting. "You'll be late for school." You hid your head under the pillow to shut down the noise coming from outside the room. "Your car is towed, have you forgotten about it?" Once again, you groaned. "If you don't come down after five minutes, you'll have to take the bus."
Once again your eyes opened, raising your head. Five minutes? How will you get ready in five minutes? Your allowance is almost gone. You needed to go to school with Johnny or you might end up taking a bus. You were wearing your school uniform when you heard a car engine and saw Johnny leaving already. "Fuck!" You whispered to yourself before taking your bag and hurriedly ran down the stairs.
"Fuck you, Johnny Seo!" You shouted in annoyance, dragging your school bag outside the gates of your large house while taking your phone out and calling your bestfriend. "Pay for my cab fee."
“I don’t have any money left,” Taeyong whined. “Just take the bus.” He said before hanging out that pissed you off much more.
You groaned in annoyance before walking to the bus stop. You will get scolded for being late again if you don’t take the bus. You just wished that no one is going to see you.
Luckily, the bus isn’t that crowded but there’s only one seat available, beside a guy who had the same uniform as yours. How annoying.
The guy was focused on answering a worksheet, his name written above. Yuta Nakamoto. You heard that name before but instead of pondering over it, you decided to shrug it. You were thankful that he’s the only person from your school who is on the same bus as you or it will be really embarrassing. Once you walked to the gate of the school, you noticed the discipline director on the gates. Shit, you thought, you forgot your necktie. This has detention written all over it. This day is so unlucky.
A piece of fabric can be felt on your neck followed by the same male student walking before you. The discipline director saw him and scolded him for not wearing a necktie that startled you. You glanced at the necktie hanging on your neck and hastily fixed it before getting inside the campus. Your eyes meeting with the same guy you were sitting next to earlier on the bus. Yuta Nakamoto.
You shrug while passing him. It's his fault that he's punished like this. Why would he give his necktie to you? When you arrive at your locker, you exchange the worn-out necktie with the spare you have in your locker. "Hey, did you study for our Math exam?" Taeyong greeted that made you roll your eyes. He knew you never study for anything.
"You know everyone in school, right?" He's such a social butterfly, everyone is his friend. You handed him the necktie, "Return this to Yuta Nakamoto."
"You know Yuta?" But you didn't answer him and started walking the opposite way to your first class in English. Johnny's eyes were on you as you entered the class you shared with him, raising your middle finger as you sat down on your chair and slept on the desk.
The bell rang. English is done. Lifelessly, you walked to the other side of the building to attend your most loathed class of all. Math.
Everyone was busy reading notes as you sat next to Taeyong. "Did you study?" You asked and he nodded, grinning. "Just open your paper." He groaned and you gave him a glare before the teacher came in with papers in his hand. He asked everyone to keep their notes and handed out the worksheets.
Your head was aching at all the numbers and letters on the paper. Your eyes glanced at Taeyong's paper, lightly elbowing him to show his answer. The teacher passed your table and Taeyong lightly glanced at his paper then glared at you.
"Let me see." You whispered when the teacher passed your table. He opened his paper, lightly glancing around as you try to copy what is written. Someone called for the teacher while you were busy copying the numbers from Taeyong's paper then someone called your name.
"Copying, Ms. Y/N?" the teacher asked that made you turn to him. "Thank you for informing me, Mr. Nakamoto." Nakamoto? You lightly glanced at the guy in glasses next to the teacher. Of course, it’s him.
You were brought to the detention room after class. An hour of doing nothing. What’s more annoying is the fact that you were given a failing grade in Math already. There’s nothing you can do but hiss in annoyance.
When you got home, you had an earful from your grandfather about how you’re such a disappointment to your mom and even comparing you to the perfect Johnny. “Get Y/N a personal tutor.” the older commanded your twin brother, “Maybe she’ll stop cheating in exams.”
You were annoyed. It’s a one-time event. This is your first time copying from Taeyong since you really didn’t know about the Math exam. Why are they all acting like you’re a serious offender? This is all that guy’s fault for snitching on you.
The next day was more annoying because you came face to face with Nakamoto Yuta, the snitch, who even had the guts to sit in front of you. “He will be your tutor,” Johnny claimed that made you wide-eyed. He’s kidding. “Grandpa already agreed to it. He said if you pass Math, you’ll get back your car.” You glared before sighing. You needed the car back, going on the bus is a hassle and Johnny isn’t even helping you at all.
Even if you hated and wanted to ruin this guy’s life, he’s your only choice to getting what you want.
From your usual seat, you were always transferred to sit beside Yuta as per your grandfather’s wishes. If he’s this influential in school, why are you even bothering to study? Yuta is always with you every class and you were annoyed at how he seemed like a bodyguard, making sure that you attend classes, rather than a tutor. He’s quiet, you have to give him that. Always buried in his books. You believe he doesn’t even know your name.
That was until you pushed all his buttons.
It’s not because you’re dumb but school is unmotivating for you so you never put in any effort into your subjects especially Math. “You got this wrong again, Y/N.” Yuta exclaimed while pointing at your answer. Wow, he knew your name. “I’ve been explaining this for hours. Are you stupid?”
“What did you call me?”
“Stupid,” he said while looking straight at you. “Even a second-grader would know how to multiply numbers.” You hissed before taking the paper and started answering the question properly. Yuta chuckled when you returned the paper to him, checking your answer. “You have such a bad temper.”
“Piss me off more and you might get the worst temper ever.” You warned but he only smirked that annoyed you more. “Annoying loser!” you muttered under your breath.
"That's the reason why you don't have any friends." He really is here to annoy you, isn't he? And you have a friend, Lee Taeyong. Pissed off, you pulled the first thing you saw from him, his glasses, then threw them on the ground before stepping on them.
Johnny's booming voice can be heard in the library and you know, you're in deep trouble already.
------
"You broke your tutor's glasses?" your grandfather asked, voice rising. You rolled your eyes, poking the beef on your plate before cutting it so small. “Apologize to him tomorrow.”
You stared at him in surprise. You? Apologize? To that nerd? He started it! “I won’t, just buy him new glasses.”
“I already did,” Johnny whispered, drinking his juice.
“See?” You smiled cheekily, “Problem solved.”
The older man sighed before dropping down his utensils that startled your twin brother. “You’re hopeless, Y/N.” He claimed while glaring at you. “If you don’t apologize to Mr. Nakamoto, I’ll cut off your allowance in half. And we’ll pretend that the discussion about your car didn’t happen.” What? You gasped but he only stood up, making Johnny sigh.
“Y/N, please be nice to Yuta. He’s been through a lot.”
-------
You have no choice but to wake up extra early and come to school with Johnny. You were napping on your desk when you felt a thud beside you. Yuta is here. “Is that really Yuta?” You overheard your classmates asked that made you curious. When you raise your head to look at him, you were startled at his shining, glassy eyes staring at you as well. Before you could say anything, a female classmate called his name. “Yuta, do you want to eat tteokbokki with us later?”
You sighed before taking out your book, tapping a pencil on the cover. “Yeah sure,” Yuta claimed and you inwardly smile, no tutor lesson today. “Do you want to come, Y/N?” The girls were looking uncomfortable so you just shook your head, claiming that tteokbokki is disgusting which made Yuta roll his eyes. “Then I’ll just come to your place later for the tutor session.” A groan escaped your lips. What the hell?
It was late afternoon when the maid called for you, saying that Yuta is looking for you. Johnny welcomed him and even claimed that he asked the maids to prepare the garden for the session. You were seated in front of him, looking uninterested, books sprawled in front of you as a tower of cupcakes and tea was on another table. “Your house is on another level. Must be nice living in a house like this.”
You smirked before trying to substitute x with the equation. “It’s nice because I’m always alone.”
“Why?” He asked, “Johnny seemed so cool. Your grandfather, I met him once, he looks kind.”
You giggled, multiplying both sides of the equation. “I’m not like them.” You whispered. “I’m stupid and I have such a bad temper.” You focused on the numbers in front of you.
“I’m sorry, Y/N,” Yuta whispered, putting down his pen. “That was insensitive of me to say those things and I understand why you hate me.” You lightly glance at him. What’s with the turn of events? You should be apologizing for breaking his glasses. “But I want to be your friend, Y/N.”
“My friend?”
“I don’t have lunch plans. Whenever Taeyong or Johnny leaves you during lunch, I want to sit beside you.” You only stared in curiosity. What is he saying? “Let’s be friends, Y/N.” He held out his hand and you saw your grandfather watching the two of you from afar with a smile on his face. Hastily, you took his hand and shook it, smiling at him. Maybe your grandfather will return your allowance to normal.
The maid went out with a large bowl which made Yuta smile while thanking her. “I brought tteokbokki. Do you want some?” He asked but you shook your head, giving him a disgusted look. “Just try one.” He poked one tteok covered in orange sauce, showing it to you. “Just say ah.”
How weird. But you opened your mouth to taste this almighty tteokbokki he loved. It was so chewy in your mouth, the taste of spiciness and sweetness playing in your mouth. “How was it?”
“Disgusting.”
You didn’t realize how lonely it is to eat alone if not for Yuta. Whenever Taeyong would eat lunch quickly because of council duties or Johnny with his radio show, Yuta would always sit beside you and offer you dessert. He would ask you if you have trouble understanding something in class when you’re seated next to each other in almost all classes you have.
“Maybe they’re dating.” You overheard in class once, female classmates looking at you who just entered the room. “Why would Yuta reject you if not?” She was talking to a girl seated in front, touching her hair.
Another girl came to your table. “Are you and Yuta dating?”
What? You and Yuta? A chuckle escaped your lips. “Of course not, who would fall in love with that nerd?” You saw how the girl seated glared at you followed by a thump beside you. Yuta laid his head on the desk and the girl scrambled back to her seat just as the teacher came. You shrugged.
During lunchtime, Taeyong immediately left for a meeting in the council. But unlike any other day, Yuta didn’t sit beside you. It was weird. He was consistent these past few days. Why would he suddenly change? But once again, you shrugged. It’s not even lonely to sit alone.
You waited the whole afternoon for him to come to your tutor session but he's a no-show which startled you. He never misses a day even if he has part-time jobs to do. And you need him now because tomorrow is your exams in Math, the make and break of your car.
From Taeyong, you found out that he works part-time in a coffee shop near the school. He looked startled when you came in, even ordering a lot since you'll be studying. Yuta only laughed before taking your order.
The cake looks unappetizing after you kept poking your fork in it, annoyed at how you cannot understand the equation. Why are there letters in Math? It should just be numbers. "You're substituting it wrong," Yuta mumbled before placing his tray on the table and taking your extra pencil. He leaned closer to write on your paper but your gaze was on him.
You've been seated next to each other but this is the first time you saw him this close. He's handsome. A boyish charm that you cannot see in anyone else. When he turned to look at you, you blinked in surprise. He's so handsome. His red lips, the high nose, his glassy eyes. "Did you get it?"
A heavy breath followed by a shake of head, to return your focus to the equation and not the image of Yuta. "How did you get this answer?" You asked, looking at the answer which is way different than yours. Are you getting stupider?
He sighed heavily then glanced at his wristwatch. "Wait for me. I'll just finish my shift." And you nodded. That was your goal all along.
But instead of doing some practice exercises, you were focused on Yuta serving drinks. He looks like an invisible person in school but a really charming man outside. Whenever he looks at you, you look away from him and pretend to be busy in your workbook. Why are you so worked up because of him? This is crazy! Yuta is making you crazy.
He's a nerd. He's annoying. He's such a know-it-all. "Yuta doesn't like you, Y/N." you whispered to yourself then gasped when you realized you said it out loud. To your annoyance, Yuta just passed by your side with an empty tray. Did he hear that? You hope not.
It was the fifth equation when Yuta sat in front of you, yawning and stretching his arms. He was done with the job and had some break before he had to go to the gas station for his second part-time job. "You have a lot of jobs." You claimed while he checked your work. "Do you need that much money?"
"I have to pay for my tuition."
"Why would you go to a private academy if you can't even pay for it?"
Yuta put down your workbook, showing the mistakes and where you missed the question. "My parents met in that academy so it means a lot to my mom for me to graduate in the same alma mater as her." They did? Then Yuta might be rich. "My dad is filthy rich. She got pregnant but his parents don't want the child. My mom left him."
"That's just tragic."
Yuta smiled. "You know, it’s the typical rich boy - poor girl love story. It will just end that way." You glanced at him before pursing your lips. "Just try finishing three questions. It's the exams tomorrow, you need rest." Once again, he yawned. "And I have to walk you back home."
You stopped after one equation seeing how he almost fell asleep while waiting for you. He might be tired and you don't want him to be late for the next job. You promised you'll do the remaining exercises at home and show him tomorrow then hailed a cab so he won't have to walk you home. Just to be sure, you promised to message him when you arrive home.
But you never did. Never messaged him, never answered the remaining problems. All that's running in your mind is him. Yuta Nakamoto. He's not bad yet he's not great either. But something about him is piquing your curiosity. Something about him makes you want to be closer to him.
"Aish!" you shouted. You should be studying.
--------
You were surprised when the girls were left inside the room and the guys were brought outside for the test. You cannot copy from Yuta. Maybe it was your grandfather’s plan. Surprisingly, the questions aren’t as hard as you thought they would be. Or maybe you just got smarter. The studying to distract your mind from thinking about Yuta has paid off.
Taeyong sighed heavily while seated in front of you during lunch. “I think I’ll fail the exams.” You glance at him in surprise. Do you have a different question as him? You asked him the first question which you remember clearly and you had a debate on what the right answer is. When you showed him the solution, Taeyong just whined in defeat. “Wow, you’re teaching me Math now.” he claimed before tapping his chin. “Should I get Yuta as a tutor as well?”
“You can’t.” You raised your voice at him. “Yuta is mine.”
Taeyong snickered. “Speaking of him, did you know that he was sleeping while taking the exam?” That took your attention. “I don’t even know if he finished the questions. He’s just out of it.” Now, you’re worried. What happened to him? Why did he just sleep when he’s taking exams?
“How were the exams?” Yuta asked when you met in the library but you only stared at him. “Is it hard?”
You shook your head. “Did you finish your exam?” He chuckled while nodding, asking if it was Taeyong who told you. “You finished everything?”
Again, he nodded. “Don’t worry. I just didn’t get enough sleep last night.” You asked him why but he just smiled. “The exams are now done. We’ll just have to wait if you pass to get your car back.”
You nodded. “You want a ride?”
Yuta shook his head, smiling at you. “I’ll have to resign as your tutor, Y/N.” You stared at him in surprise. Wait, why? “I’ll have to take a new job
”
“My grandfather can pay you.” But Yuta shook his head. “Why do you need that much money anyway? Are you dating someone?” He smirked before leaning his back on the chair. He didn’t say anything but the smile in his eyes was enough proof to know that he is indeed dating someone.
Nakamoto Yuta? The nerd? Someone actually had the nerve to ask him out? Someone actually raced you to ask him out.
You passed by the tteokbokki shop and ordered some of Yuta’s favorite food. It does taste weird, but addicting. You poked one tteok and put it in your mouth, munching on it with a lot of annoyance. Why doesn’t it taste good now? It tastes good when Yuta was feeding you one. You just wasted money on this food.
You were annoyed. At Yuta. At this girl. He seemed friendly with everyone, it’s annoying. You sat beside Taeyong in class which surprised your friend. “You broke up with Yuta?” he teased that made you roll your eyes. “I thought he’s yours.” You stepped on his foot, earning a yelp from him which made the whole class look at the two of you, even Yuta.
When the results came out, you rushed to see if Yuta is still the first-rank student. You were worried the whole time when you found out he slept in class. What if he lost the top rank? He lost his scholarship? You grasped your hands together, wishing that he’ll remain in his spot. When you opened your eyes, in front of the rank one student, you beamed at the sight of his name. Yuta Nakamoto.
He’s still the rank one even if he slept during the exams. Yuta is really amazing.
Your phone rang and you answered it without even looking at the caller ID, “Where are you?” Yuta. “Did you see your rank?” Wait, what? “I don’t think your grandfather
” A crowd of students came and you almost lost your balance if not for someone who caught you. Him. “Hey.”
“Hey,” you called then glanced at your phone. You were just talking to each other. “My rank?”
He smiled. “Twelfth.” You almost ran to the part of the bulletin board that has the top 10-20 rank list. On the twelfth rank is your name, three spots higher than your twin brother and seven spots higher than your bestfriend. You felt a hand on your shoulder and you turned to hug the grinning Yuta. “You did it, Y/N.” He whispered against your ear, “I’m proud of you.”
You lightly glanced at him. The first person who told you that he’s proud of you. Now, you had an answer to yourself on why Yuta is someone you cannot shake off. He is the first person who believed in you.
“I’ll treat you to tteokbokki.” Yuta glanced at you in surprise before you took his hand.
The old woman greeted you and Yuta was surprised when you greeted her back. “We should eat something you like. I’ll treat you.” But you shook your head, licking the sauce from your fingers. “When did you start eating tteokbokki?”
You shrugged then dipped the tteok to the red sauce. “Why were you on the first bulletin board? Do you think you’ll get the top rank?” A light kick from you under the table made him wince.
“I thought you might lose your scholarship.” You claimed before eating tteokbokki again. "You were distracted during the exam so I was worried." He stared at you in surprise before smiling. "Shouldn't you stop all these part-time jobs if you want to keep your scholarship?"
"I lost the gas station gig," he confessed, poking his fork on the tteokbokki. "I'm worried that you didn't come home that night so I skipped work. Johnny told me that you did when I came to your house but I can't sleep that night."
That night? You were thinking about him that night. "Eomma said someone might be thinking about me." Shit! "But I guess I'm just worried about you." He's what? "But don't mind it." He shrugged before eating the tteokbokki.
"You were worried?"
He rolled his eyes, looking at you deadpan. "Of course. What if you fail your exam? Your grandfather's payment will all go to waste." You just munched on the tteokbokki, chewing loudly. "You're enjoying the tteokbokki so much. I thought it's disgusting."
You shook your head, stuffing your mouth with the chewy tteok. "When did I say that?"
Yuta chuckled, wiping your sauce-clad finger with tissue. "You're really charming, aren't you?" You rolled your eyes. Why is he shaking you like this? He's already dating another girl. "Just let me save a little more money before asking you out on a date, hmm?"
What? You choke on the chewy rice cake, coughing at his statement. Ask you out on a date? "I don't want us to be like my parents' story so I need to work hard to at least reach halfway to your world." He munched on the tteokbokki but your eyes remained on him. "Please wait for me before I can take you out officially."
Is that why he resigned as your tutor? How did this turn into this? "How are you so sure that I'll wait for you?"
"You said so yourself, I'm yours." He chuckled and you mentally killed Lee Taeyong. "And I do like you." Shit! He did heard you back in the coffee shop. This is so embarrassing. "Even if you don't like me romantically, just let me take you out on one date."
"Sure." You claimed, "Since you sound so desperate and I'm such a nice girl to reject you."
Yuta chuckled. "Of course you are."
“Yuta.”
“Hmm?”
“Treat me to ice cream after this.”
The guy nodded that made you smirk to yourself. This nerd isn’t so bad at all.

Hey I saw your requests were open! I was wondering if you could do a gender neutral reader insert for Bill? Like the reader is more punk/goth and paints their nails and Bill is curious about it so they paint their nails together? Thanks for taking the time to write and take requests! :)

Bring Back Manly Men (Headcanon)
Gender Neutral! Reader/Bill
Typical to 80â€Čs fashion, nail polish ads targeted towards women usually ranged from a spectrum of nudes, peaches, bronze, bronze, light pinks, hot pinks, violets, reds, maroons, purples.
These were the colors Missy often seemed to go for on the Preston family’s rare outings, so Bill hadn’t really given deep thought to the possibilities of other colors.
Nevermind the fact that Bill doesn’t really think deeply about anything other than Wyld Stallyns and his friendship with Ted.
However, he suddenly started paying attention when Best’s Magazine came out with a new issue that featured Steven Tyler with painted nails on the cover.
If an absolute rock legend such as Steven Tyler could wear nail polish, why couldn’t he?
Of course, he wasn’t sure where to go to buy black nail polish and if Ted couldn’t tell him (which he couldn’t) then Bill was out of luck.
That is, until he saw you.
Bill noticed the dark tint of your nails and it took him a moment to come up with enough courage to ask you where you got the polish.
You wanted to be skeptical... Why was Bill Preston of all people talking to you, let alone asking about your nail polish?
“Mervyn’s.” You replied. “...Why?”
“To have the best band in the world.” Bill answered, as if it was obvious. You weren’t able to make the connection and let the conversation end there.
The next day at school, you noticed Bill stumbling late for your shared class together, acting nervous with his hands held firmly in his pockets.
“Mr. Preston, would you like to participate in class today?” Your history teacher snidely remarked, much to Bill’s chagrin. The boy hesitantly took his hands out of his pocket, revealing a pair of thin, winter gloves.
“Mr. Preston, would you like to take off the gloves?” Bill huffed, his cheeks pinking as all eyes met his figure. One the offending items were removed your teacher sighed heavily, eyes raking over the bandages wrapped all around his hands.
“Get into an accident, Mr. Preston?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And how exactly did you manage to injure both your hands?”
“He cut them!” Ted offered, making Bill’s eyes twitch. “On the washing machine?”
“Trying to fix the washing machine.” Bill tried to correct.
“And no blood on your bandages? Well Mr. Preston, I think your injury has distracted the class long enough. I expect these worksheets to be done by the end of class.”
“Yes, sir.” You saw Ted pick up Bill’s paper, trying his best to follow along and help his friend out.
“Hey,” you whispered, having finally found a moment in the lecture to try and talk to Bill. “What really happened to your hands?”
Bill looked around, making sure no one was looking to peel some of the bandages back to reveal black paint stained on his fingernails down to his middle knuckles.
“I tried to paint them but my hands were too shaky but then it wouldn’t come off.” He fidgeted, looking shameful. “I don’t know what I’m gonna do.”
Your heart went out to the dim blonde, and you sighed, wondering if you were going to regret what you were about to say.
“Swing by my house after school, I can fix them for you.”
“Really?” You nodded, eyeing your teacher’s back to make sure you weren’t going to get caught. You scribbled your address on a piece of paper for him.
You weren’t sure why he wanted to paint his nails so badly, but nonetheless, you felt the urge to help him.
-
As much as Ted wished to tag along, he knew his dad would kill him if he so much saw a drop of paint on his son’s nails, and he didn’t mind some alone time with Missy as she dropped him off, so he opted out of the experience.
“Oh god.” You mumbled as you peeled off the last layer of bandages. It really was a mess. The two of you sat on your bed, soft music playing through your radio.
“So,” You opened your bottle of acetate, a chemical scent sweeping through your nostrils. “Why do you want to paint your nails anyway?” You worked on cleaning the goop off his nails.
Trying not to move his hand, he gently leaned over to the side of your bed and unzipping his backpack, revealing the rolled up copy of Best.
“Oh! Is that what you were trying to go for?”
“Trying, at least. Ted tried to help as well but...” His free hand went to scratch the back of his neck.
“It takes a bit of practice.” You patted his hand, trying to encourage him. “It’s nice, every once and a while, to try and treat yourself by painting your nails.” He hummed in agreement.
“You know, It’s not just Steven Tyler,” you mention, ignoring his wincing as you pushed his cuticles back. “David Bowie paints his nails, Ozzy Osbourne, and so does Freddie Mercury! Although, he only paints his left hand since he’s right-handed.”
“Most excellent.” Bill was caught off guard. He supposed he wasn’t as caught up with the rock world as he thought.
“I’m surprised you wanted to do this.” You mumbled, clipping his nails. “Most guys wouldn’t be caught dead. And.. aren’t you afraid that people will call you.. names? Most of our classmates may not be as progressive as you are.” You unscrewed the nail polish cap
“Well... Ted is the only person I hang out with, and you’re my friend now, right? For doing this?” You met his gaze and nodded, enjoying his candor. “So if I only care about you two, then what does it matter? The only negative consequence I can think of is how it will affect our band, but if anything, we’ll be even more bodacious than we already are!” He concluded.
“I think you’re on to something there, Preston. Most of those guys became famous because they didn’t let bias or other people’s judgement define them. They were just themselves. You finally finished, picking up his palm and admiring the work.
“What do you think?” You asked.
“Wow. I- This is most resplendent.” He gushed, lifting his hands to get a better look.
“Be careful not to touch anything, the paint still isn’t dry.” He nodded, slowly getting off your bed to head to the mirror in your room.
He almost forgot you were there, getting so engrossed in posing his hands and recreating the magazine’s picture, until you awkwardly cleared your throat.
“You.... want a picture? Like Steven’s?” You asked, opening one of your drawers to reveal a polaroid.
“Really?”
“Yeah, for your band, right?”
“O..okay.” Bill couldn’t suppress the smile, backing up towards your wall and lying his hands on his face.
“3...2...1...” click. “There you go.” Bill looked quite nice, and you couldn’t help but feel proud that you helped him be able to feel this way.
“Here, you keep it.” Bill handed the picture back to you. “You can be the first.”
“First?” You questioned. “First what? First fan?”
“No! The first stylist! We’ll be sure to mention you when we go on talk shows and perform concerts.” He answered, his confidence making you smile.
The moment was broken by the honking of a car outside.
“Oh! That’s probably Missy. Thank you for helping me! I’ll see you tomorrow?” Bill gently but quickly gathered his stuff, standing by your doorway.
“Yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow Bill.” He smiled, leaving your eyeline as he traversed downstairs.
You looked down at the polaroid, still in your hands and smiled softly. You had a feeling you weren’t going to regret being Bill’s friend.
